The Locomotive Workshop is an impressive artefact from the 19th century that needed to meet the needs of the 21st century. It required a contemporary update to usher in a new stage of its life; this time as a series of brand-new innovative, collaborative work spaces and high-end retail tenancies.

All recent poor quality additions were completely removed, leaving only its original framework in place. With the original structure fully revealed, we inserted a series of lightweight steel mezzanine levels throughout the building. Combined with full height open atrium spaces, the heart of the building was generously washed with sunlight — naturally revealing the contrast between the old and new. This project was undertaken in collaboration with Curio, Buchan and Mirvac Design.
