Our client wanted to create a vibrant mixed-use destination in the heart of Sydney’s Haymarket and Chinatown precinct, bringing together retail, hospitality, hotel and residential uses. The challenge was to accommodate a complex program while responding sensitively to the area’s rich cultural heritage, fine-grain laneways and retained heritage fabric.

Our concept was to make the retained heritage building the social heart of the development, surrounded by a series of interconnected lounges, dining venues, gathering spaces and arrival experiences. New retail, hotel and residential uses are layered around and above, creating activity throughout the day and evening. A clear structural framework provides efficient and flexible floorplates, while the architecture responds to the scale and character of Chinatown’s historic streets and laneways, creating a contemporary new place to gather, stay, live and experience the city.
