Sited at the intersection of Macquarie University’s commercial and academic precincts is University Avenue. This architectural undertaking comprises of a single building to contain a combination of commercial and academic functions. The brief reflects the University’s philosophy of maintaining a close relationship between industry and academia.
In response to its surrounding bushlands, the new building cascades down into the landscape and comprises of a permeable façade to encourage accessibility all around. The building’s most visible features are its two glass-encased drums, dubbed the “collaborative drums”. Housing the building’s enterprise-related and academic activities—these are the focal points of the scheme. Inside, further beyond these spaces is an internal courtyard that is abundantly and naturally lit. The space connects to the green outdoors and creates a new urban park for the campus within. This project has been undertaken in collaboration with Kann Finch.
